National Awakening and the Role of Paguyuban Pasundan

Lore Unlocked

From Cultural Movement to National Politics

Entering the twentieth century, Tatar Sunda also entered the era of national awakening. Modern education, urbanization, and the emergence of an educated class gave rise to new consciousness among Sundanese society. Resistance to colonialism was no longer carried out solely through physical warfare, but also through organizations, the press, education, and political struggle.

One of the most important organizations in this context was Paguyuban Pasundan, founded on 20 July 1913. Initially, this organization operated in the social and cultural fields, particularly to advance Sundanese society. However, over time, Paguyuban Pasundan transformed into a political force that also fought for the future of the Indonesian nation.

Figures such as Oto Iskandar di Nata played an important role in bringing the spirit of Paguyuban Pasundan into the national political arena. Through the Volksraad, this organization voiced the aspirations of the people, advocated for education, and supported the idea of "Indonesia with a parliament."

The role of Paguyuban Pasundan demonstrates that Sundanese identity did not stand in opposition to Indonesian nationalism. On the contrary, Sundanese culture became one of the foundations that enriched the national movement. This chapter positions Tatar Sunda as an active part of the emergence of Indonesian national consciousness.
